Smart Cities and Sports in India
The Indian National Smart Cities Mission INSCM was conceived as an urban renewal and retrofitting program, by the Government of India. The Mission was aiming to develop smart cities across the length and breadth of India, with the intention of making them modern, amenties rich, citizen friendly and sustainable.
The central Union Ministry of Urban Development was the responsible implementing and delivery agency, in collaboration with state governments of the selected cities. The mission was planned to include 100 cities, with the deadline for completion of the projects set between 2019 and 2023. As of July 2024, 7202 out of total 8018 tendered projects have been completed, utilizing ₹144,530 crores out of total tendered amount of ₹164,163 crore.
The idea was to give a sense, of what is possible at the infrastructure level, to local residents, after decades of moribund city development apart from capital cities of states, in post colonial India. The SCM envisioned developing select areas in 100 selected Indian cities, as model areas, based on an area development plan. The hope being that such delivered Best Practices would impact other parts of the city, as well as nearby cities and towns under various state governments.

Of course, sports is not just about medals. The very fact that one has prepared, kept oneself fit and well, looked after the body and the mind, and competed with the best in the world, without fear or favour. That itself is the Medal. A medal that life gives everyone of us.
But a medal would be nice if one competes on the biggest stage for India.
A medal is also a reflection and validation that a nation has the necessary processes, infrastructure, systems and talent in place to aim for the best, at the important stages on which sports is played. And of course, the fans are happy.
